2008 Tours - Wednesday 25th June Pontypool Valleys - Joint Pub Tour with Shoostring Appalachian Dancers
|
 |

This week we were in the middle of our dancing area and took a trip up the Afon Llwyd Valley, named after the Afon Llwyd (or Grey River in English) which runs from Blaenavon in the north down to Cwmbran in the south.
We were delighted to be joined by Shoostring this evening, having not had a joint event for a few years. First stop was the small town of Abersychan . . .
8.30 p.m. Twyn-y-Ffrwyd Inn, Abersychan
Abersychan was a thriving industrial centre for iron production during the 19th and early 20th centuries but today it is a small sleepy town that is undergoing a regeneration. The Twyn-y-Ffrwyd Inn (pronounced Toon-y-frood) is a Grade II listed building set in a quiet back street just off the centre of Abersychan and just off the main road from Pontypool to Blaenavon.

There has been a public house on this site since 1795 and we last visited in 2001 and 2002. This community pub is little changed since with a traditional public bar plus a dining room and small games room. There is also a small secluded garden which provides a small oasis of peace from the busy main road as it faces towards the wooded valley hillside.

9.30 p.m. Globe Inn, Talywain
We now moved on the the Globe Inn at Talywain, just a short drive above the town centre of Abersychan and a favourite of the side over a number of years.

The Globe is a very friendly local with a traditional bar and the landlord has been known to host the occasional beer festival. We danced both inside and out and enjoyed both an excellent pint of real ale and a warm welcome.

Do come and see us at some stage and if you have a liking for tradition then you will be made very welcome. For those males amongst you who enjoy a pint or two and would like to keep fit then you will be ideal as a dancer.

If you are a musician of either sex who enjoys folk music, then again you will be well received, so whatever instrument you play, provided that it is portable, come and join us and learn our music. Come along and we'll ensure that you enjoy yourself and hopefully come back for more as we tour our area over the summer months.

If you require any more information then please check our Contact and Feedback page for our current officers telephone numbers or email us at our address: Enquiries 'at' Isca-Morrismen.com. We are a lively bunch and travel a fair bit with our activities, both in the UK and Overseas, so come on - contact us today and join in the fun, you'll not regret it!

This year we are delighted that our traditional dancing programme is being sponsored by local Welsh Breweries, producers of excellent real ale to whom we are grateful for their wholehearted support.
Please enjoy their real ales and visit their websites to learn more by clicking on the pictures.
We also acknowledge the support and encouragement of The Mount Pleasant in Old Cwmbran, our after-practice venue during the winter.
